Michael Regnier, Ph.D.

Professor in Bioengineering
Adjunct Professor in Physiology & Biophysics

Introduction

I am a Northwest native, who grew up in Portland Oregon. I attended Portland State University (PSU) as an undergraduate and received bachelors degrees in History and Political Science. In those formative years I also became an Olympic Weightlifter, competing in several National and International meets. This experience ruined me for a life in politics or law, as I became fascinated with how the body adapts to physical and psychological training. As such I went on to receive a Masters degree in Exercise Science from PSU, then did my Ph.D. work in Biology-Neurobiology at the University of Southern California (i.e. NCAA National Football Champions in 2004, 2005).

After defending my dissertation, I moved to the Mayo Clinic to do a post-graduate fellowship in Anesthesia Research, followed by a second fellowship at UCLA. The incredible post-graduate experiences I had helped guide me in the development of my own independent research program. In 1995 I returned to the Northwest as a Research Scientist in the Departments of Physiology & Biophysics and Bioengineering. Two years later I accepted a faculty appointment in Bioengineering and I have been here ever since. In the past several years our research group has grown from its humble beginnings to a large group (~20) of professors, research professionals, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.
